The place that gave me a really strong start

Just a quick note to point you toward boston.com (and later in print in the Boston Globe) where I wrote a piece on auto makers and Gen Y.

Read it here: http://www.boston.com/cars/newsandreviews/overdrive/2011/01/automakers_and_gen_y_missing_t.html

  1. Great piece – and a topic we’ve been keeping a close eye on at Zipcar as well. Our take is that it’s definitely an issue of cost but perhaps more of a generational shift rather than a temporary response to the economy. We commissioned a survey recently on Millennial driving habits that you might find interesting: http://www.slideshare.net/colleenmccormick/millennials-survey-5861342. In addition to cost, social media and the environment were also cited as top factors for driving less.

Thanks for reading, and I appreciate the comments.

One of the reasons relying on public transportation is viable is because of programs like yours. You can ride buses and take trains all you want, but at some point, you’re going to need to go to a wedding in New Hampshire. Without convenient car share programs, you’d be severely limited to where you could go.

My question to you is: If percentage of Gen Y getting driver’s licenses is actually falling, are you seeing any dip in your business? Gen Y must make up a hefty percentage of your clients. I’d figure if a measurable number of people were actually not getting licensed, you’d see it.
